Another Cyber attack on shipping has the potential to cost the victim significant amounts of money in disruption, delays and potential ransom payments.  These highly public attacks are just the tip of the metaphorical iceberg as many are not reported, however much can be done to pre-empt growing threats.

In our weekly report Maritime Cyber Security & Threat Sep20 week 3 supported by RedSkyAlliance we highlighted a known email threat targeting CMA "Downloader.VBA.Emotet" The Emotet malware which is typically used for stealing banking/password info, but can be used to download further malware on the network, including but not limited to ransomware.

There is no confirmation that this was the route of entry for the current attack but highlights the benefit of looking ahead and monitoring threats.
