Suspected Insurgent Encroachment, Nhonge Island

Reporting suggests that the IS-affiliated terrorist organisation Ansar al-Sunna has moved units to the islands of 'Ilha Mionge/Nhonge', off the coast of Mozambique.

Unconfirmed reporting has also suggested that beheadings and  acts of kidnapping may have taken place, as well as the seizure of vessels. Further reports suggest that the group attempted to steal goods, and killed four individuals.

Assessment

If verified, this incident would represent a migration of the IS-threat in Mozambique away from the mainland, and towards coastal islets. In recent weeks there has been an upsurge in IS activity, including the recent attack on the port of Mocimboa da Praia.

Reports of vessels being seized have so far not been corroborated by any other intelligence source, and it is currently assessed that the vessels in question are likely to be fishing vessels. IS would likely seek to gain ground on such islands due to the security and freedom of movement they would allow the group.

Dryad Global will continue to monitor the situation, and will update accordingly.
