👉 Within the last reporting period uncertainty continues around the future status of the UN backed Grain Deal. Russian and Turkish media have cited sources close to the talks indicating that a successful negotiation is imminent whilst recent reporting indicates that talks have concluded with no future talks planned. The grain deal continues to be a key lever of influence available to Russia to assert its will within the Black Sea and a vital tool in a bid to secure future concessions.
👉 Within the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria continues to state that it will enhance surveillance and increased patrolling of its maritime domain in response to a recent spate of incidents that have seen crews kidnapped within recent weeks in neighbouring waters.
👉 Despite the recent incidents, the overall trend of incidents within the maritime domain continues to decline with a total of 19 incidents recorded between January and May 2022 compared with 13 incidents in 2023.
