The latest Dryad Global Maritime Intelligence Brief examines a sharp deterioration in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman risk environment, alongside rising cyber threats affecting maritime, energy and cruise-sector organisations.
On 1 June 2026, Iranian forces renewed direct attacks in the Persian Gulf, striking the merchant vessel Sarisha V with an unmanned surface vessel approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Umm Qasr. In a coordinated escalation, a Fateh-110 ballistic missile was launched towards Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, where falling debris reportedly injured five U.S. personnel and contractors after interception by Kuwaiti defences.
The latest briefing also assesses the continuing threat from naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, following the discovery of a mine in Omani territorial waters on 30 May. With commercial vessels still being redirected, intercepted or escorted through the region, the operational picture remains highly unstable.
Beyond physical maritime threats, this week’s MIB also looks at cyber risk. China-aligned APT groups are exploiting regional instability to target maritime and energy organisations in the Middle East, while the Carnival Corporation breach highlights the continued exposure of cruise-sector passenger data to financially motivated cybercriminal groups.
For shipowners, operators, insurers and security teams, the message is clear: maritime risk is no longer confined to the sea. Kinetic threats, mining hazards, cyber espionage, criminal data theft and geopolitical instability are now converging across the global maritime domain.
